Our ornamental bark meets BSI PAS100 and Control Quality Protocol standards, so you can be sure you are getting the highest quality from Corker.
But What Makes It Practical?
Bark chips are a champion in all weathers. A thick layer of bark chips will stop weeds in their tracks, defend against soil erosion in heavy rain, retain moisture during hot spells, and protect roots and insulate soil during cold snaps.
Did we mention it lasts up to 4 years? And when it has eventually broken down, you can just dig it in to build up and improve your soil. Then add another fresh layer and you’re away again!

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is ornamental bark?
Ornamental bark is a decorative mulch made from high-quality softwood or mixed conifer bark. It’s used to enhance the appearance of flower beds, borders, and pathways, while also offering practical benefits such as weed suppression and moisture retention.
2. Is ornamental bark suitable for all garden areas?
Yes, it can be used in borders, flower beds, around trees and shrubs, under hedges, and even in large planters or containers. It’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
3. How does ornamental bark help with weed control?
By forming a barrier that blocks sunlight, ornamental bark helps to reduce weed growth. When applied in a layer of 50–75mm, it significantly slows the spread of weeds and minimises maintenance.
4. Will it improve soil moisture retention?
Yes. A layer of ornamental bark acts as a mulch, helping the soil beneath retain moisture by reducing evaporation—especially helpful during warmer months or dry spells.
5. How long does ornamental bark last?
Ornamental bark can last up to 2–3 years, depending on weather exposure and foot traffic. It breaks down slowly over time and can be topped up as needed to maintain its appearance and effectiveness.
6. Does it decompose into the soil?
Yes. As a natural product, ornamental bark gradually decomposes, enriching the soil with organic matter as it breaks down.
7. Is it safe for pets and children?
Yes, it’s safe for use in gardens where pets and children play. It’s a natural, untreated product and contains no harmful chemicals.
8. Does ornamental bark have an odour?
It may have a pleasant, natural woody scent when first laid, which typically fades after a few days as it settles into the garden environment.
9. Can it stain paths or clothing?
Corker’s ornamental bark is screened to reduce fines and dust, so staining is minimal. However, slight residue may transfer in wet conditions or with regular contact.
10. How deep should it be applied?
For best results, apply a layer of 50–75mm. This ensures effective weed suppression, moisture retention, and visual impact.
11. Can it be used with potted plants or containers?
Yes. Ornamental bark makes an attractive top layer in pots and containers, while helping retain moisture and reduce soil splash during watering.
