Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is Corker Compost weed free?

The best way to answer this question is to explain how recycled waste is turned into compost on a commercial scale:

Green waste is collected from around the county and delivered to strategic recycling sites.

Once on site the stage is to remove any hazard waste ie Plastic etc.

The green waste is then placed into a mechanical shredder, which breaks the waste down to a size suitable for screening.

The next stage is the waste being placed into the screeding process, which reduces the waste below 30mm/

The waste is then stored outside and mixed to product the perfect mixture of moisture, air & green/brown material.

This mixing causes the waste to heat up quickly to a heat of up to 75c (170f). This heating up process will kill off all weeds and any other unwanted elements eg weedkillers.

Normally the compost will sit outside for a period of 12 weeks, during this the compost heaps will be turned and mixed up to a minimum of 8 times.

During the first half of this period it is important the mix remains at 60c (140f) for a minimum of 5 weeks.

Now the compost has matured the next stage is to put the compost back through the screening process and screened down to 10mm.

The final stages is samples are sent for analysis. This will be done on a regular basis.

The final result is a high quality sterile compost that will not contain active compost that will not contain active weed seeds, but will be found with all the desired nutrients for your growing medium.

  • Is commercial recycled compost better than DIY compost?

Although there is great enjoyment in producing your own compost, the quality of commercial recycled compost is considerably higher commercial compost will be a lot darker, more rich in texture and 100% weed free.

  • Can I use commercial compost as potting medium?

Basically the answer is no.

Although compost has got huge benefits when used in the garden it is used to course a product to plant seeds or seedlings.

Potting soil consists of a mixture of peat moss, ground up tree bark & tiny pieces of pearlite, which is volcanic glass. The lightweight materials provide an airy growing medium for seeds & root systems.

  • Can I add fresh compost to my existing soil?

Yes definitely. Regularly adding compost to your garden will continue to stabilize the soil ph level and introduce fresh nutrients. The new compost can be dug into the existing soil or used as a mulch.

  • If used as a mulch how deep should this be?

Ideally approx. 75mm , a minimum of 50mm.
