Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is this timber typically used for?
This range of structural timber is commonly used in framing, roofing, decking subframes, joists, stud walls, fencing, and general construction. Different sizes suit different load-bearing and design needs.
2. Is the timber treated?
Yes, most of these sizes are pressure-treated (often with green or brown preservative) to protect against rot, fungal decay, and insect attack, especially for external or ground-contact use.
3. Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, when treated, it is suitable for outdoor use such as garden structures, sheds, raised beds, and decking frames. However, we recommend sealing cut ends with timber preservative.
4. Is it kiln-dried?
Typically, yes. Kiln-drying reduces moisture content, helping to stabilise the timber and minimise shrinkage or warping once installed.
5. Are the listed measurements nominal or actual?
The listed measurements are nominal. After machining and planing, the finished size is slightly smaller.
6. Can I paint, stain, or oil this timber?
Yes. It can be finished with paint, wood stain, or oil. Ensure the timber is clean and dry before applying any treatments.
7. Is it easy to cut and drill?
Yes, standard woodworking tools can be used. When cutting treated timber, always reseal the exposed ends with a suitable preservative.
8. Is this timber suitable for structural work?
Yes, it’s commonly used in load-bearing construction, including framing, joisting, and roofing. Always consult a professional for structural or span requirements.
9. Can I use this for decking support?
