Product Description
Horticultural granite grit is just the ticket for aerating your soil, giving your plant roots better access to air and water.
With a neutral pH and a maximum particle size of 6mm, our horticultural grit can be worked into your existing soil to improve its structure and drainage.
How Does It Work?
Heavy soils, especially clay, are made up of tiny particles with large surface areas. This means there is less space between the soil particles for water and air to penetrate. They also stick together more easily than in lighter soils, leaving less space for root growth.
Heavy soil is often seen as a curse rather than a blessing! But, for all its sins, heavy soil is often extremely rich in nutrients and holds water well so the challenge is in enabling these fantastic qualities.
That’s where our horticultural granite comes in: dug through, the grit separates the soil particles and creates air pockets which allow water to drain through more efficiently and give roots room to grow.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is horticultural grit used for?
Horticultural grit is primarily used to improve drainage in soil, prevent compaction, and support healthy root growth. It’s perfect for seed sowing, potting mixes, rockeries, and as a decorative top layer.
2. Is it suitable for all types of plants?
Yes, especially for plants that need free-draining soil such as alpines, cacti, succulents, and Mediterranean species. It’s also ideal for breaking up heavy clay soils in general garden use.
3. What size is the grit?
Corker’s horticultural grit is screened to a consistent size, generally between 2–6mm, making it ideal for both soil conditioning and surface dressing.
4. Is it safe for organic gardening?
Absolutely. It’s a natural, chemically inert material with no additives, making it safe for use in organic and environmentally friendly gardening.
5. Can I mix it with compost or garden soil?
Yes, it’s recommended. Mixing horticultural grit with compost or soil improves aeration and drainage, helping to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
6. Is it good for top dressing pots and planters?
Definitely. A layer of grit on the surface of pots helps reduce soil splash, deters pests like fungus gnats, and gives a tidy, attractive finish.
7. Can I use it in a rockery or alpine garden?
Yes, it’s an essential component for rock gardens and alpine beds, providing excellent drainage and a natural appearance that complements the setting.
8. How much do I need?
It depends on the application:
For soil mixing: Use roughly 1 part grit to 3 parts soil or compost.
For top dressing: A 25kg bag will cover around 1–2 square metres at a 1cm depth.
9. Will it change the pH of my soil?
No, horticultural granite is pH neutral and won’t affect the acidity or alkalinity of your soil.
10. How does this differ from builders’ grit or sharp sand?
Horticultural grit is lime-free, thoroughly washed, and safe for plants. Builders’ aggregates may contain salts or contaminants harmful to roots and should not be used in planting.
11. Can it help with weed control?
Used as a mulch or top dressing, horticultural grit can help suppress weed growth by acting as a physical barrier and reducing light penetration.
