Product Description
Ardex X7R S1 is a high-performance, rapid-setting adhesive developed for wall and floor tiling. Its advanced polymer-modified formula, enhanced with fibre technology, ensures superior adhesion strength, excellent grab, and outstanding resistance to slip. It provides the flexibility needed for substrates that are prone to movement or vibration, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
This adhesive offers an extended working time, allowing for larger mix batches and broader application areas compared to standard rapid-set adhesives. Despite its extended open time, grouting can commence just three hours after application, ensuring fast and efficient project completion.
Certified to BS EN 12004 C2FES1, Ardex X7R S1 is classified as an “Improved Fast Setting Deformable Cementitious Adhesive with Extended Open Time.” Its tensile adhesion strength exceeds industry benchmarks, performing exceptionally well under conditions such as water immersion, heat aging, and freeze-thaw cycles. These properties make it suitable for external use, including demanding environments like swimming pools.
Available in 20kg bags.
Key Benefits and Features
• Rapid Setting: Grouting can commence just 3 hours after application.
• Flexible and Movement Resistant: Provides flexibility for substrates prone to movement or vibration.
• Extended Working Time: Allows for larger mixes and application areas compared to standard rapid-set adhesives.
Uses
Ardex X7R S1 is specifically designed for fixing porcelain tiles, as well as other low-porosity materials, including glass and porcelain mosaics, terrazzo, natural stone (excluding translucent or moisture-sensitive types), and brick slips. This high-performance adhesive bonds effectively to a wide range of construction substrates, including concrete, cement/sand renders and screeds, heated subfloors, brickwork, blockwork, correctly primed calcium sulphate-based screeds, tile backer boards, and plasterboard.
It Is suitable for both internal and external applications, including swimming pools.
Preparation, Application & Grouting
Surface Preparation:
The surfaces intended for tiling must be clean, stable, and free from dust, dirt, oil, grease, or any other substances that may impede adhesion. Additionally, ensure the substrate was adequately dried before commencing tile installation.
The surface must be stable and capable of supporting the weight of the tiles being applied. ARDEX X7R can be used on both dry and damp surfaces; however, moisture-sensitive materials should be completely dry and remain dry after tile installation.
For added protection in wet areas, the ARDEX WPC Waterproof Coating System can be applied prior to tiling. This creates a waterproof barrier that safeguards moisture-sensitive backgrounds, preventing water damage to floors and walls.
Mixing:
To prepare Ardex X7R S1, add the powder to clean water in a clean container while stirring. Using a 10mm chuck mixing paddle attached to a variable-speed electric drill is recommended for efficient and consistent mixing. For a semi-pourable consistency suitable for floor tiling, mix a 20kg bag with up to 5 litres of water. For a slump-free consistency ideal for wall, coving, or skirting applications, use 4 to 4.25 litres of water per bag.
The adhesive consistency can be adjusted to meet site conditions and specific material requirements; however, do not exceed the maximum recommended water content per bag.
Once mixed, the mortar has a pot life of approximately 60 minutes at 20°C, or 45 minutes when mixed to a slump-free consistency.
Application:
The prepared mortar should be applied to the substrate using a trowel and combed with a suitably sized notched trowel to create a straight ribbed adhesive bed. The choice of notched trowel will depend on the tile size, the substrate, the tile’s back profile, and the level of coverage required. Tiles must be fixed within the adhesive’s open time and pressed into place with a twisting and sliding motion.
For floor tiling, external installations, or wet areas such as swimming pools, a solid bed fixing method is essential. With the semi-pourable mix, solid bed fixing can be achieved by pressing the tiles into place using the same twisting and sliding motion. For the slump-free mix, tiles typically need to be back-buttered immediately prior to placement.
To ensure optimal performance under standard UK site conditions, tiles should be fixed within 20 minutes of adhesive application. The mortar should be applied in temperatures above 5°C.
