Product Description
VDW 850 Plus Paving Joint Mortar is a cutting-edge, high-performance epoxy resin-based solution designed for demanding environments such as roads, driveways, patios, and public spaces. Its self-compacting, pre-coated graded alluvial quartz sand formulation offers excellent resistance to pressure washing, street cleaning, and environmental effects. The product’s standing application method enhances safety and user ergonomics, reducing physical strain compared to traditional kneeling methods. It is suitable for a wide range of surfaces, including natural stone, reconstituted stone, concrete, and porcelain, offering a durable and weed-free joint that can withstand heavy pedestrian and vehicular loads.
Thanks to its advanced formulation, VDW 850+ can be applied in wet conditions, including rain, and cures efficiently in temperatures above 8-10°C, ensuring rapid, seamless installation without delays. It resists shrinkage and cracking even when residual moisture remains in the joints, unlike conventional cement mortars. Its durability, aesthetic appeal, and resistance to frost, salts, and high-pressure cleaning establish it as the industry standard—trusted globally as a resilient, long-lasting solution for high-traffic public and commercial landscapes.
Available in 25kg tub.
Key Features
High Durability and Resistance:
Fully resistant to high-pressure cleaning, mechanical street cleaners, freeze-thaw cycles, de-icing salts, and prevents weed growth and insect damage.
Rapid, Wet-Weather Application:
Can be applied in wet conditions, including rain, without delays, and cures quickly even in cold temperatures above 8-10°C.
Excellent Compatibility:
Suitable for natural stone, reconstituted stone, concrete, porcelain tiles, and various paving surfaces, making it versatile for different landscaping projects.
Ergonomic:
Applied standing-up with self-compacting technology, reducing the need for kneeling and improving health and safety.
No Shrinkage or Cracking:
Uses a water-dispersed epoxy resin bound sand formulation that prevents shrinkage, cracking, and related structural issues common with cement-based mortars.
Preparation & Application
Site Requirements:
The structure must be stable and capable of bearing loads, with a water-permeable sub-base and paving layer properly designed and installed to accommodate expected traffic. All installations should conform to BS 7533 standards.
VDW 850 Plus joint mortar cannot compensate for substructure settlement or waterproofing and is not suited for large slabs due to fast curing.
Where necessary, movement joints should be installed to meet structural requirements and anticipated movement levels.
VDW 850 Plus mortar can be applied to damp, wet, or humid paving surfaces, including during rainy conditions.
In pedestrian areas:
Paving can be installed on a compacted, stable, and permeable sand or gravel bed. However, for improved durability and reduced cracking, it is recommended to lay paving on a permeable concrete or mortar bed.
Installation should follow the manufacturer’s instructions or be in accordance with BS 7533 guidelines.
In vehicular traffic areas:
To minimize joint cracking, paving should be installed on a permeable concrete or mortar bed, designed to suit the expected traffic loads and in accordance with BS 7533.
Joint depth:
Minimum 30 mm; in heavy or frequent traffic areas, the full bedded joint depth should be used.
Joint width:
Minimum 5 mm continuously; for joints wider than 15 mm in high-traffic areas, the depth must be at least twice the joint width.
Application conditions:
Ambient and substrate temperatures should be between 3°C (37.4°F) and 25°C (77°F). The VDW 850 Plus material temperature should be between 3°C (37.4°F) and 20°C (68°F).
Tools:
A forced-action mixer is required. Additionally, use a water supply with a spray nozzle, a squeegee, and a coconut fibre brush. Uncured mortar can be cleaned from tools with water.
Test area:
On certain reconstituted or sensitive natural stone paving, contact with VDW 850 Plus binder may cause the stone to appear darker or have a ‘wet look’. These effects are not defects or workmanship issues. Always perform a test area beforehand to assess the potential impact.
Preparation:
Thoroughly clean the surface to remove dirt, cement residues, organic materials, and any other contaminants. Ensure all joints are cleaned out to the specified depth.
Pre-wetting:
Thoroughly saturate the paved surface before beginning application and maintain this moisture level throughout the work. The extent of pre-wetting depends on the type and porosity of the paving, as well as site conditions such as wind, direct sunlight, and temperature.
Mixing:
Pre-mix the VDW 850 Plus resin-coated aggregate (Component A) in the pail. Then add the entire contents of the VDW 850 Plus liquid hardener (Component B) from the bottle provided. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and uniformly homogeneous.
Mixing time:
Minimum 3–5 minutes. Do not add any water during mixing. Any unmixed components must not be used.
Filling the joints:
Apply the mortar to the pre-wetted surface using a rubber squeegee, working thoroughly into the joints where it will self-compact. It is recommended to fill the joints starting from the highest points and working down to the lowest.
Brushing off:
After approximately 5 minutes, or immediately at temperatures above 15°C (59°F), remove any excess VDW 850 Plus mortar by brushing. Lightly rinse the surface with water from a hose at about 25 cm distance, taking care not to wash out mortar from the joints. Be cautious to keep water away from areas not yet jointed, and prevent residue-laden water from ponding, standing, drying out, or running over completed areas.
Finally, use a damp coconut fiber brush to remove remaining fine residues—avoid brushing dry material into unfilled joints. Clean the brush frequently in water and ensure that no dry mortar residue is brushed into unfilled joints.
Curing:
Cordon off the freshly applied areas for at least 24 hours or until the surface is no longer tacky. Once dry, the area can be walked on. Full vehicular access can be permitted after 3–5 days, when the pavement has fully hardened.
It is recommended to perform a strength test before the final opening. A very thin film of resin binder may remain on rough or inadequately cleaned surfaces; however, this will fade over time with traffic and weather exposure.
Disclaimer:
All times and durations are calculated at 20°C (68°F) and 65% relative humidity. Higher temperatures will reduce these times, whereas lower temperatures will prolong them.
Coverage
The grout coverage depends on tile size, joint width, depth, and the Grout Coverage Figure. For VDW 850 Plus, the coverage figure is 1.69. To estimate the grout requirements for square or rectangular tiles, follow these steps (all measurements in mm):
1. Add the length and width of the tile.
2. Multiply the result by the joint width.
3. Multiply the result by the joint depth.
4. Multiply the result by the Grout Coverage Figure (1.69 for VDW 850 Plus).
5. Divide the result by the tile length.
6. Divide the result by the tile width.
This will give the material requirement in kg per square meter.
Example:
For tiles measuring 900mm x 600mm x 20mm with 5mm joints:
(1500 x 5 x 20 x 1.69) ÷ 900 ÷ 600 = 0.47kg/m².
This means one 25kg pail of VDW 850 Plus will cover up to 53m² of tiling. These calculations will vary depending on the joint dimensions.
